# 9 Best AI Visibility Tools for Small Business

> For a local service business, the best AI visibility tool is the one that can ask a question from where your customers actually are. BrightLocal (from $41 a month, 20 prompts) and Local Falcon (credit-based, from $24.99 a month) sample by location. Most other trackers set only a country, which misses how ChatGPT answers a 'near me' question. Start free, and pay only once you have prompts worth tracking weekly.

The best AI visibility tool for a plumber is not the best one for a software company, and nearly every list ranking for this search is written for the software company. The difference comes down to one setting: **where the question gets asked from**.

When a homeowner types "emergency plumber near me" into ChatGPT, the answer depends on where ChatGPT thinks that homeowner is. OpenAI's own help documentation says ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on your IP address, and gives the example of rewriting "What are some good restaurants near me?" into the search query "top restaurants San Francisco." Most AI visibility trackers let you pick a country. A country is not where your customers are. That one mismatch explains why so many owners pay for a dashboard, see numbers that do not match what they get on their own phone, and cancel.

This guide ranks nine tools on the thing that matters to a local service business: whether they can sample your answer from your service area, what that costs, and when no tool is worth paying for yet. If you are still deciding whether [AI search matters for local businesses](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/does-ai-search-matter-for-local-service-businesses) at all, start there. If you already know it does, read on.

- **Location is the setting that decides a local answer.** ChatGPT uses an approximate IP-based location, and device location sharing is off by default. A tracker that only sets a country cannot reproduce a "near me" answer.
- **Two tools sample by location:** BrightLocal (Local AI Visibility on the Track plan from $41 a month, 20 prompts) and Local Falcon (geo-grid scans from 3x3 to 21x21 points, credits from $24.99 a month).
- **One reading is noise.** Across 2,961 responses, SparkToro and Gumshoe found under a 1 in 100 chance of the same brand list twice. Only buy a tool that samples each prompt more than once.
- **The bar is low and the gap is big.** SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index found ChatGPT recommended just 1.2% of roughly 350,000 locations, against 35.9% visibility in Google's local 3-pack.
- **A tracker never moves you into the answer.** Its real output is the list of sources cited for your competitors. If it cannot show you those, skip it.

## What is the best AI visibility tool for a small business?

For a local service business with one location, the short answer is BrightLocal if you want one subscription, Local Falcon if you want to see your whole service area, and the free stack if you have never checked at all.

1. **BrightLocal Local AI Visibility.** Best for a single-location owner who wants AI tracking bundled with local SEO basics.
2. **Local Falcon.** Best for seeing how AI answers change across a service area, block by block.
3. **The free stack (Search Console, Bing Webmaster Tools, a hand-run audit).** Best for anyone who has not yet checked by hand.
4. **Otterly.AI Lite.** Best cheap multi-engine tracker when you write the city into every prompt.
5. **LLMrefs.** Best prompt volume per dollar if you serve many towns or offer many services.

Everything below that on the list is either built for brands selling nationally or priced for enterprise. That does not make those tools bad. It makes them the wrong shape for a plumber.

## Quick comparison

Prices are the vendor's own published figures, checked September 23, 2026, except where noted.

| Tool | Best for | Starting price | Location control | The deal-breaker |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BrightLocal | One-location owners | $41/mo Track (1 location) | Per location | 20 prompts, manual refresh only for now |
| Local Falcon | Service-area mapping | $24.99/mo for 7,500 credits | Geo-grid points | Credits drain fast on big grids |
| Otterly.AI | Cheap multi-engine checks | $29/mo Lite, 15 prompts | Country, fixed per prompt | No city setting |
| LLMrefs | Many services or towns | $79/mo, 500 prompts | 50+ countries | Weekly refresh minimum |
| Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit | Existing Semrush users | $99/mo per domain, billed annually | Country level | 25 prompts, extra seats cost more |
| Peec AI | Agencies, multi-brand | Not published in USD (see below) | Multi-country on Advanced only | Only 3 engines per plan |
| Ahrefs Brand Radar | Existing Ahrefs users | $199/mo add-on (per Zapier) | Country level | Needs an Ahrefs plan on top |
| Yext Scout | Multi-location brands | Not published | Per location, 20 competitors | Enterprise sales process |
| Profound | Funded brands | Free 7-day trial, then custom | 1 region on trial | No public self-serve price |

## How we ranked these

Five criteria, each chosen because it changes the answer for a 1 to 30 person trade business rather than a marketing team.

1. **Location control.** A plumber's answer changes across a metro area. A tool that can only set "United States" measures a question your customers are not asking.
2. **Repeated sampling.** Assistants rarely repeat themselves, so a tool must run each prompt more than once and report a rate. Single-shot scores fail this test.
3. **Shows the raw answer and the cited sources.** The sources cited for your competitors are the only output you can act on. A score without them is decoration.
4. **Real entry cost for one location.** We priced the plan that covers the engines a homeowner uses (ChatGPT and Google's AI features) rather than the headline tier.
5. **Time to run.** An owner will not maintain 200 prompts. We favoured tools that are useful with 5 to 20 well-chosen questions.

## The nine tools, ranked for a local service business

### 1. BrightLocal Local AI Visibility

**Best for:** a single-location service business that wants AI tracking inside a local SEO tool it would use anyway.

**Pricing:** included at no extra cost on the Track, Manage and Grow plans for active locations. BrightLocal's [help center pricing table](https://help.brightlocal.com/hc/en-us/articles/12623266931730-How-much-does-BrightLocal-cost) lists Track for one location at $41 a month or $369 a year.

BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility shows how a business appears when people ask ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and Google AI Mode for a recommendation, broken down by platform, prompt type and individual prompt. You can track up to 20 prompts, split into unbranded prompts (the customer does not know you yet) and branded ones. It reports mention rate, share of voice and average position per prompt, compares you against other local businesses, and lists the websites the assistants cited when answering your prompts.

**Pros:**
- Tied to a location, not a country, which is the right unit for a trade business.
- The AI sources view is exactly the outreach list you need.
- Separates unbranded from branded prompts, so you do not fool yourself with your own name.

**Cons:**
- 20 prompts is enough for one location but tight if you offer many services.
- Data refreshes only when you click "Update data", which uses one manual report run. BrightLocal says scheduled updates are coming in a future release.
- Reports an average position, which the variance research below says to ignore.

**Our verdict:** the default pick for one location. You get AI tracking plus citation and ranking tools for about the price of a single-purpose AI tracker.

### 2. Local Falcon

**Best for:** owners who cover a wide service area and want to see where in it the AI mentions them.

**Pricing:** credit packages from [$24.99 a month for 7,500 credits](https://www.localfalcon.com/pricing), then $49.99 for 15,150, $99.99 for 31,250 and $199.99 for 63,150. Pay-as-you-go credits cost $0.05 each. New accounts get 100 free credits.

Local Falcon is a geo-grid rank tracker that now applies the same grid to AI answers. It asks the same question at every point on a grid, from 9 points (3x3) up to 441 (21x21), across ChatGPT, Google Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode and Grok. The output is a map of where you are mentioned, a Share of AI Voice figure, and the phrases the AI uses to describe you with sentiment attached.

Each grid point costs one credit, and AI scans draw from the same pool as map scans. Here is the arithmetic for a typical plumber: 5 prompts on a 5x5 grid is 125 credits per engine per run. Across three engines, weekly, that is roughly 1,600 credits a month, well inside the $24.99 Starter package. The same routine on a 13x13 grid is about 11,000 credits, which pushes you to the $49.99 tier. The optional Falcon AI analysis adds 25 credits per report.

**Pros:**
- The only tool here that shows how the answer changes across your service area.
- Built-in repeated sampling: every grid point is another independent response.
- Cheapest real entry for location-aware tracking.

**Cons:**
- Credit maths is easy to get wrong. Big grids on many prompts burn a monthly package fast.
- Local Falcon does not publicly document how each grid point's location is presented to each assistant, so treat point-level differences as directional.
- Monthly credits expire at the end of each month.

**Our verdict:** the best pick when "am I visible in the north end of town" is the actual question. Keep grids small, 5x5 or 7x7, until you know which prompts matter.

### 3. The free stack

**Best for:** anyone who has never checked, which is most owners.

**Pricing:** free.

Google Search Console's generative AI report, Bing Webmaster Tools' AI Performance report and GA4's AI Assistant channel together tell you whether Google's AI shows your pages, which phrases pull your pages into Microsoft's answers, and whether anyone arrives from an assistant. Pair them with a hand-run audit: five customer-voice questions, run ten times each in a logged-out session, with the city written into the prompt. The full walkthrough is in our guide to [checking if AI recommends you](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/how-to-check-if-ai-is-recommending-my-business), and our [free AI visibility check](https://www.pavadotech.com/tools/ai-visibility-check) tests whether the assistants' crawlers can read your site at all.

**Pros:**
- First-party data from the companies serving the answers.
- A hand-run audit from your own phone, in your own town, is location-accurate by definition.

**Cons:**
- No trend history unless you keep a spreadsheet.
- None of the free reports covers ChatGPT recommendations directly.

**Our verdict:** do this first. If the audit shows you in 7 of 10 answers, you do not need a tool yet. If it shows 0 of 10, you need fixes, not a dashboard.

### 4. Otterly.AI

**Best for:** a cheap, daily, multi-engine check when you are willing to put the town name in every prompt.

**Pricing:** [Lite is $29 a month](https://otterly.ai/pricing) for 15 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Perplexity and Microsoft Copilot, tracked daily. Gemini and Google AI Mode are $9 a month add-ons on Lite. Standard is $189 for 100 prompts. Annual billing takes about 15% off.

Otterly runs your prompts daily across four engines and reports mentions, citations and competitor share. Its help center is explicit that country is a fixed setting assigned when a prompt is created; to track the same question in another country you create a new prompt. There is no city setting, so for local work the location has to live inside the prompt text: "best water heater repair in Mississauga", not "water heater repair near me".

**Pros:**
- Lowest monthly price for a multi-engine tracker.
- Daily runs give you more samples per month than weekly tools.
- Unlimited team members on every plan.

**Cons:**
- Country-level only. It cannot reproduce an IP-based "near me" answer.
- 15 prompts on Lite, and the next tier is $189.

**Our verdict:** a solid budget option if you write local prompts with the city in them. Do not expect it to see neighbourhood-level differences.

### 5. LLMrefs

**Best for:** a business with many services or many towns that needs prompt volume without paying per engine.

**Pricing:** [a single plan at $79 a month](https://llmrefs.com/pricing), described as a limited-time price, with 500 prompts, all engines, and unlimited projects and seats. A 7-day free trial is available.

LLMrefs tracks brand mentions, cited sources and fan-out queries across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude, Copilot, Meta AI and DeepSeek. Geo-targeting covers 50+ countries and 20+ languages, and data refreshes weekly at minimum. A commenter on r/localseo recommended it for city and town tracking; the vendor's own pricing page describes geo-targeting at the country level, so confirm city handling in the trial before you rely on it.

**Pros:**
- 500 prompts for $79 is the best volume per dollar here.
- Every engine included, no add-on maths.

**Cons:**
- Weekly refresh means fewer samples than daily tools.
- The $79 price is labelled limited-time.

**Our verdict:** the right shape for a multi-service contractor covering several towns, as long as each prompt names its town.

### 6. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit

Semrush charges [$99 a month per domain, billed annually](https://www.semrush.com/pricing/ai/), for 25 custom prompts with daily tracking across ChatGPT, Google AI, Gemini and Perplexity, plus competitor research and an AI-readiness site audit. It is sensible if you already pay for Semrush. One agency owner on r/localseo reported the add-on "hasn't delivered much value" because most of the insight was about where competitors were mentioned rather than what to do next.

### 7. Peec AI

Peec's [pricing page](https://peec.ai/pricing) lists Starter at 50 prompts, three models of your choice, daily tracking and one project, with multi-country tracking reserved for the Advanced tier. Prices are geo-priced and did not render in our fetch; Ayzeo reported Starter at €70 a month on annual billing in August 2026. It is a clean tool built for marketing teams and agencies. Our [Peec AI alternative](https://www.pavadotech.com/alternatives/peec-ai) page covers when a retainer makes more sense than a dashboard.

### 8. Ahrefs Brand Radar

Brand Radar tracks Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini and Copilot. Zapier's September 2026 review lists it as a $199 a month add-on to an Ahrefs plan. It is strong for benchmarking a brand against competitors and poor value for a single location that does not already use Ahrefs.

### 9. Yext Scout and Profound

Yext says Scout measures performance "location by location" and tracks win rates against your 20 closest competitors, across ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity and Google's surfaces. It is sold inside Yext packages with no published price, which puts it in multi-location territory. Profound's pricing page shows a free trial (50 prompts run daily for 7 days, one region) and a custom-priced Enterprise plan. The trial is worth using once as a snapshot. For the longer comparison, see our [Profound alternative](https://www.pavadotech.com/alternatives/profound) page.

A tracker tells you that a competitor is being named instead of you. Our [GSEO service](https://www.pavadotech.com/gseo) finds out why: which roundup posts, directories and review sites the assistants are reading for your trade and town, and what it takes to get your business onto them.

## What a tracker can measure, and what it cannot

A tracker can tell you how often your name appears in answers to a fixed set of questions, which competitors appear instead, and which websites the assistant cited. It cannot tell you what a real customer saw, and for a local business that gap is bigger than the vendors admit.

**Sampling variance is the first limit.** SparkToro and Gumshoe had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts through ChatGPT, Claude and Google AI a combined 2,961 times. The odds of the same list of brands appearing twice were under 1 in 100, and closer to 1 in 1,000 for the same list in the same order. So the only honest number a tool can give you is a mention rate across many runs. Position in the list is noise. Any tool leading with "you rank #3 in ChatGPT" is selling you a number that does not exist.

**Location is the second limit, and the one that matters most to a plumber.** OpenAI's help documentation says ChatGPT collects general location information based on your IP address and may share it with search providers. Device location sharing is optional and off by default; when a user turns it on, ChatGPT can use more specific information about nearby businesses. If memory is on, saved details like the city you live in can shape the query too. A tracker running prompts from a server can reproduce none of that unless it deliberately sets a location per prompt. That is the whole case for Local Falcon's grid and BrightLocal's per-location tracking, and the reason country-level tools should always have the town written into the prompt.

**Personalization is the third.** Your customers are logged in, with histories and memories you cannot see. No tool models that. This is also why checking on your own logged-in phone gives you a flattering picture: the assistant has probably talked to you about your own business before. Our guide on [why a plumbing company is missing from ChatGPT](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/why-is-my-plumbing-company-not-showing-up-in-chatgpt) covers what the answer usually looks like to a stranger.

**Traffic is the fourth.** Mentions are not visits. Much of the value of an AI mention arrives later as a branded search or a direct phone call that no assistant gets credit for. If your analytics shows nothing, read about the [missing AI Assistant traffic](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/ga4-ai-assistant-traffic-not-showing) before concluding the channel is dead.

## When a tool is not worth paying for

For most single-location trade businesses, a paid tracker is not worth it until three things are true: you have run the free audit, you have fixed what it found, and you have a small set of prompts you want to watch every week.

Skip the subscription if any of these apply:

- **You have never checked by hand.** Forty minutes with a phone tells you more than a month of dashboard data, because it is from your town.
- **You are at zero.** If you appear in 0 of 10 answers, a tool will spend months telling you so, and the diagnosis for [a website missing from ChatGPT](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/why-is-my-website-not-showing-up-in-chatgpt) is free. The work is off-site: listings, reviews, and the local roundup posts the assistant cites. Google's AI features follow the same logic; see how to [show up in AI Overviews](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/how-to-show-up-in-google-ai-overviews).
- **Nobody will act on it.** A report nobody reads is an expense.
- **The tool only gives you a score.** No raw answers, no cited sources, no prompt text: cancel.

Pay for one when you serve several towns or services, when you want to prove that a change worked, or when you are losing specific high-value prompts to named competitors and need to watch them weekly.

The bar is low right now. SOCi's 2026 Local Visibility Index analyzed 2,751 multi-location brands and roughly 350,000 locations, and found ChatGPT recommended 1.2% of locations against 35.9% visibility in Google's local 3-pack. Locations ChatGPT did recommend averaged a 4.3 star rating. Those are chains, not independent plumbers, but the gap is the point: most local businesses are not in the answer, and a dashboard confirming that costs money without changing it. The inputs that do change it overlap heavily with local SEO, starting with [enough Google reviews](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/how-many-google-reviews-do-i-need-to-rank) with real detail in them.

## What owners and practitioners actually chose

The Reddit threads on this question are worth reading, and worth reading carefully, because a large share of the replies are vendors.

The 52-comment r/smallbusiness thread that often comes up for this search, "Has anyone else noticed their business is invisible on ChatGPT even though they rank well on Google", opens with a test of 50 local businesses in which only 6 appeared in AI results. Further down, the original poster says they built an audit tool and links it. Among the top comments, another reply promotes a service for seeding brand mentions across subreddits, and a third is from a founder who discloses their own tracking product. The best line in the thread came from someone selling nothing: "You don't have a ranking problem. You have a selection problem."

On r/localseo, a thread asking whether any AI visibility trackers exist specifically for local businesses drew a founder pitching their tool, and a recommendation for another tool that was repeated so eagerly that a third commenter mocked it: "wonder if we can say Paige by Merchynt again and again." The bluntest reply: "don't depend on these as none are reliable or consistent."

The more useful voices were the ones doing the work themselves:

- **A junk removal owner on r/localseo** said free scans annoyed him because they reported that he did not show up without saying what was searched, how it was asked or which assistant was asked. He ended up hiring a specialist firm that quoted a 90-day ramp and ran enough searches to mean something. His point: one search, in one city, for one service would not have told him anything.
- **A practitioner on r/localseo** built their own WordPress plugin on the DataForSEO API that runs each prompt three times per AI tool and averages the mentions, to account for the variance.
- **Another r/localseo commenter, using an HVAC company as the example,** said to track prompts like "emergency furnace repair near [area]", insist on raw responses and sources rather than a score, and never blend ChatGPT, AI Overviews, Gemini and Perplexity into one number because they do not behave the same way.
- **One commenter in the 75-comment "best AI visibility tool" thread on r/localseo** said flatly that no tool will improve your mentions, and that the work is SEO, video and earned mentions on relevant publications. That matches how [ranking on ChatGPT](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/how-to-rank-on-chatgpt) actually works.

The pattern across owners is consistent. The ones who got value from paid tracking used it to find which specific service and city questions they were losing and to whom. The ones who felt burned bought a score.

## Deeper answers

### Should I track my business name or the service?

Mostly the service. A branded prompt ("is Smith Plumbing any good") tells you whether the assistant's facts about you are right, which matters, but it is not how new customers find you. Unbranded prompts are where the opportunity is. BrightLocal splits the two for this reason. A sensible split for one location is about four unbranded service-and-city prompts for every branded one, plus a short set of factual checks: your hours, your phone number and your service area. A recommendation that hands out a disconnected number costs you a customer who was already sold.

### How many prompts does a local business actually need?

Fewer than any vendor's plan includes. Five to ten unbranded prompts covering your highest-value jobs, each written the way a homeowner speaks and naming the town, will tell you almost everything. A single trade in a single town is a far narrower set of candidates than a national software category, so a mention rate settles faster. Add prompts only when you add a service or a town. If you are paying for 500 prompts as a one-location plumber, you are paying for a spreadsheet you will never open.

### Which engines should a plumber or HVAC company track?

ChatGPT and Google's AI features first, because that is where homeowners ask, and the same order holds when the goal is getting an [HVAC business cited by AI search](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/how-do-i-get-my-hvac-business-cited-by-ai-search). Google AI Overviews and AI Mode sit on top of the searches your customers already run, and ChatGPT is the assistant owners in these threads test first. Gemini is worth adding if the tool includes it cheaply. Perplexity matters less for local trades, though it cites sources openly, which makes it useful for finding which pages feed answers; see how to [get cited by Perplexity](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/how-to-get-cited-by-perplexity-ai). Do not pay per-engine add-ons for engines your customers do not use.

### Does my Google Business Profile show up in these tools?

Indirectly. The tools report whether you were named and what sources were cited, and for Google's AI features your Business Profile data is part of what Google already knows about you. For a business with no storefront, getting the [service area profile setup](https://www.pavadotech.com/blog/service-area-business-google-business-profile) right is groundwork. ChatGPT, though, answers from the web pages it retrieves, so a perfect profile with no third-party mentions behind it rarely moves a ChatGPT answer on its own.

## How to pick

Run the free audit from your own phone first, with the city in every prompt. If you are missing and want to watch a handful of service-and-town questions, BrightLocal is the one-subscription answer and Local Falcon is the service-area answer. Buy a country-level tracker only if you write the town into every prompt, and never buy one that will not show you the raw answer and the sources behind it.

## FAQ

### What is the best AI visibility tool for a small local business?

For a single-location service business, BrightLocal's Local AI Visibility is the most practical starting point: it is included on the Track plan from $41 a month, tracks 20 prompts across ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews and AI Mode, and ties them to a location rather than a country. If you want to see how answers change across your service area, Local Falcon samples the same prompt at multiple points on a map. Country-level tools like Otterly or Semrush suit brands selling nationally, not a plumber.

### Is there a free AI visibility tool?

Yes, several of the most useful ones are free. Google Search Console now includes a generative AI report on every property, Bing Webmaster Tools has an AI Performance report with sample grounding queries, and GA4 has a native AI Assistant channel. None of them tells you whether ChatGPT names you for a local question, so pair them with a hand-run prompt audit. Most paid tools also offer a trial: Profound's free trial runs 50 prompts daily for seven days, and Local Falcon gives 100 credits on signup.

### Do AI visibility tools work for 'near me' searches?

Only if they control where the question is asked from. OpenAI says ChatGPT may use an approximate location based on your IP address, and gives the example of rewriting 'good restaurants near me' into 'top restaurants San Francisco'. A tracker that runs prompts from a data center with only a country setting cannot reproduce that. Local Falcon runs the prompt at every point on a geo-grid, and BrightLocal ties prompts to a location. Otherwise, write the city into the prompt.

### How much does AI visibility tracking cost for a small business?

Entry prices checked on September 23, 2026 run from $24.99 a month for Local Falcon's Starter credits to $29 for Otterly Lite, $41 for BrightLocal Track, $79 for LLMrefs and $99 per domain for Semrush's AI Visibility Toolkit. Ahrefs Brand Radar starts at $199 a month on top of an Ahrefs plan, and Profound and Yext Scout do not publish prices. For one location, anything above about $100 a month is buying scale you will not use.

### Why do AI visibility tools show different results every time?

Because the assistants themselves give different answers every time. SparkToro and Gumshoe had 600 volunteers run 12 prompts 2,961 times and found under a 1 in 100 chance of getting the same list of brands twice. A trustworthy tool samples each prompt several times and reports a mention rate. A tool that reports a single rank position, or a score with no raw answers behind it, is reporting noise.

### Can an AI visibility tool get my business recommended by ChatGPT?

No. A tracker measures; it does not change what the assistant says. What moves a local business into the answer is off-site: consistent business facts across directories, reviews with detail in them, and mentions on the roundup posts and local sources the assistant cites. The useful output of a tool is the list of sources it saw cited for your competitors, because that is your to-do list.

### Is Semrush's AI visibility add-on worth it for a local business?

Usually not on its own. It costs $99 a month per domain billed annually for 25 custom prompts, and it is built around brand and country-level tracking. One agency owner on r/localseo said the Semrush AI add-on had not delivered much value because most insights focused on where competitors were mentioned. It makes sense if you already pay for Semrush for SEO and want AI data in the same place.

### Are free 'AI visibility scan' tools accurate?

Treat them as a demo, not a measurement. Many run one prompt once and return a score, which the variance data says is close to meaningless. A junk removal owner on r/localseo complained that free scans told him he did not show up without saying what was searched, how it was asked, or which assistant was asked. Only trust a scan that shows you the exact prompt, the engine, the location and the raw answer.
