Moneris fee traps to check

How to lower your Moneris fees

  1. Ask Moneris to price your last 3 months on both Flat Rate and Simplified Pricing; the Code of Conduct requires quotes to include a Cost per Transaction Disclosure you can compare.
  2. Check you are getting Canada's small-merchant interchange cut: since Oct 19, 2024, businesses under $300,000 a year in Visa volume or $175,000 in Mastercard volume get in-store credit interchange averaging 0.95% and online interchange 10 basis points lower. On a flat rate you only benefit if the processor lowers your rate.
  3. Use the Code of Conduct: your processor must give 30 to 60 days' notice of fee increases or of interchange cuts it will not pass on, and you can exit without penalty within 70 calendar days after the change takes effect.
  4. In Canada, credit card surcharges have been allowed since Oct 6, 2022, capped at the lesser of your cost of acceptance or 2.4%, and Quebec merchants cannot surcharge consumers.

Can you pass the fee to customers?

Unclear. Moneris's pricing page does not describe a surcharge feature. Canadian rules cap surcharges at 2.4% or your cost of acceptance, and Quebec merchants cannot surcharge consumers.

Contract and cancellation

Not published on the pricing page. Canada's Code of Conduct requires your agreement to show cancellation terms and fees on its cover page.
